Lupine

Clumps of lupine grow on Long Island near Kodiak Island. Blue lupine is one of this photographers favorite wildflowers and when it grows amongst all the dead and fallen trees on this island, it is very beautiful. Long Island is home to historic Fort Tidball, the site of a WW II coastal artillery. Long Island is an ideal place to consider Kodiak’s strategic significance in the battle of the Aleutians.  Over 3000 troops were stationed here, and the majority of their Quonsets are still standing in the forest on Long Island, though long caved-in and adorned with moss.  A gun emplacement stands atop a 200-foot cliff and faces the open sea, ready for a Japanese invasion that never came.  An old road bed still links the three mile long island end-for-end and makes for easy overland travel.
